Synopsis

Alula Film Festival proudly presents Wang Tung's HILL OF NO RETURN, a rarely screened gem of Taiwan cinema and the winner of Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay at the 1992 Golden Horse Film Festival, as well as Best Picture at the 1993 Shanghai International Film Festival.

In 1927, two brothers (P'eng Chia-chia, Huang P'in-yuan) leave home after their parents' death to work at Gold Toad Mountain, a Taiwanese gold mine controlled by the occupying Japanese army. Under its harsh reign, the town's other main industries are prostitution and gold smuggling. One brother marries Ah-Jou (Kuei-Mei Yang), who has survived two husbands, while the other falls for prostitute Fumiko (Ch'en Hsien-mei). As the Japanese keep searching workers for stolen gold, tensions rise.

Alula Film Festival celebrates and champions Chinese and Chinese diaspora indie, arthouse, and auteur cinema. Their programming includes a bi-annual film festival, themed retrospectives, and monthly screenings at the Culver Theater.
